The Stained Glass Windows of Saint Anthony’s Church, The Masterpieces of Guido Nincheri

The Stained Glass Windows of Saint Anthony’s Church, The Masterpieces of Guido Nincheri
Sunday, June 8, 2008, 2 PM
Admission is free

The windows of Saint Anthony’s church reflect the dynamic of the French, Irish and Italian population that in 1925 rebuilt St. Anthony’ church after the disastrous fire that destroyed the original built in 1913.  Guido Nincheri, artist, painter, and architect was commissioned by the parish to restore the church and to decorate it with frescoes and stained glass windows. The nave and the apse decoration represent the Italian community and it consists of a mix of windows, frescoes and furnishings that explain the history and devotion of the Servite Order. The transept decoration, illuminated by the Saint Joseph window to the left and the Saint Patrick window to the right, represents the French Canadian and Irish population respectively. The artwork seen in the church is in the style of the religious iconography seen in many Italian churches of the Middle Ages.  The style and colors of the windows and frescoes is representative of the painters and sculptors of the Italian Renaissance that reflected Giotto’s emotions, Raphael’s intellect, Botticelli’s and Titian’s colors and Nicola Pisano’s sculptures.

The presentation will explain the symbolism of the churches stained glass windows.  It will explain the windows iconography, the history and devotions of the Servite Order, and the symbolic nature of the Saint Joseph and Saint Patrick windows.

Part I - “Windows to Heaven” -  24 minute presentation of the life and times of Guido Nincheri.

Part II - Power point presentation on the interpretation of the church windows: Presenter: Roger Boccini Nincheri

Roger Boccini Nincheri, Geologist and former teacher of Geography and History, is the grandson of the artist and curator of the Montreal Studio. Since his retirement from teaching in 2001 he has been photographing and interpreting the works of his grandfather. He has photographed 90 churches of the 220 that have been decorated across Canada and the USA. Most of his photography is accompanied by detailed interpretations of the iconography of the artistic work. Some of his detailed interpretations are those of L’Église Ste Thérèse de Lisieux in Jonquiere, Notre Dame du Rosaire, Saint Léon de Westmount, Saint Viateur in Montreal, and the windows of the Cathedrale de Salaberry-de-Valleyfield which were lost in a fire in September 2002.
