Transhumanza

From Piazza del Popola in Ascoli Piceno
The rich and powerful wool merchant’s guild, the Corporazione della Lana, traded from the Loggia dei Mercanti. The column shape and colour reflect the tower architecture and atmosphere of Ascoli Piceno.
Depending on the weather and season, the shepherds migrated with their flocks from the cool high plains of Abruzzo and Molise down the tratturi (animal paths) to the warmer flat lands of Puglia and Basicata. The flavours of the milk and cheese will be determined by the different grasses and herbs the sheep dine on. The text reflects on this endless cycle of life.
Look around and notice the modern equivalent of the rich wool guild.
