The Climb

Photo of The Climb

From the Giro

The minimalist sculpture differs from all others. It communicates through its pure form: there is no text. The clean and sleek stainless steel is a perfect medium to express modern concepts of speed, efficiency, and function. This sculpture is abstracted from a single bike-chain link. As in traditional Italian bike races, the Preston races start here but go beyond the space of the piazza. One side of the column profile is about the winding climb, the switch-backs of the Alpine Giro where races are won or lost. The other side references the rolling terrain and circular movement of pedaling. Like the sheep paths of sculpture 14, this is about what happens beyond the space of the piazza.
