The Gateways

From Padua & the Veneto

A pair of ten-foot-high sculptures forms a northern gateway to Preston at Primrose Avenue. They evoke Italy’s traditional bell towers and castle architecture.

The vine-carved columns are inspired by local grape vines which still survive in neighbourhood yards, and by traditional brocade and damask fabrics.

Italian piazzas are local gathering spots, where people meet, fall in love, and later parade with their families. The Dante sculpture celebrates love that moves the sun and other stars; the Ello Coppola sculpture also evokes the powerful Italian sun which sees all on Earth, including the less pleasant things people do.
