Postcards to and from Italy

Emigration broke family ties and separated couples. Often one family member emigrated to Canada, found work, saved money, and then brought over relatives and other villagers. Traditional occupations were abandoned in favour of whatever jobs could be found at the bottom of the Canadian economic ladder. Hard work and time resulted in an improved standard of living.

All of the tools engraved in this column are inspired by real implements used by early immigrants. Contruction, roadwork, gardening. And scissors from the barbershop, an important socializing venue for men.

The letters and string-tied package on top of the column may be presents from home or gifts back to the family still in Italy. Look around and you’ll see the continued importance of tools.
